The popular premium compact has revealed it's new look with a face lift
BMW 1 Series 2024
The renowned BMW 1 series continues to be a popular choice in the premium compact category. BMW has not rested on their laurels and has just revealed the mid-life facelift of the current generation.
The car has received unusually extensive exterior changes compared to most. More tech, upgraded engines, and will offer only automatic transmission.

BMW 1 Exterior
The revisions are obvious however, it still retains the unmistakable and classic look of a 1 series. The car has grown with the length increasing by 42 millimetres, and the height by 25 millimetres. Despite this the flat front end sits significantly lower to the road than the previous model, giving a bolder and sportier look.
The car adopts the latest BMW design cues of a more angled surface and a streamlined front end featuring the latest and newly designed BMW kidney grille.
The rear changes are noticeable but more subtle with revised LED light clusters and a bumper re-fresh. We do like the introduction of the embossed number “1” to the c-pillar which is a nice touch.

BMW 1 Interior
The latest BMW 1 Series loses real leather as an option but offering instead more sustainable materials. This includes the option of “Econeer” upholstery made from recycled PET.
Perhaps the most obvious change in the cabin is the new infotainment display. It is made up of a 10.7-inch main screen and a 10.25-inch instrument cluster. It runs the very latest BMW OS 9 software that includes ‘Quickselect’ allowing the driver to choose numerous and convenient shortcut functions onscreen.
The rest of the new 1 Series interior retains the BMW feel of quality and minimalism. A recent survey suggests that drivers are missing “buttons” but BMW insist that further digitalisation is reducing the requirement for such. The reality is that the screen selection is unlikely to pose an issue for the majority of the target market and age profile of this latest 1 Series.
The result is a very clean and uncluttered interior.
Boot space remains unchanged from the current model but will now be an option for a 40:20:40 split folding rear seat.

BMW1 Engine and Transmission
Engine choice is also reduced with the new 1 series now only offering two petrol variants and no diesel in the latest model!
Choose from
- the BMW 120 which has a 1.5 litre three-cylinder mild hybrid delivery of 168bhp and a sprightly 0-62 time of 7.8 secs or
- The range-topping M135 with slightly reduced power of 296bhp but “significantly enhanced performance characteristics” according to BMW.
What that actually means will no doubt become clearer when we get the first drives of the new car.
BMW has also decided to ditch the ‘i’ designation which is being reserved for their all-electric models. The new model will therefore simply be the BMW 120 or M135.
The range will be launched in October and pricing is expected to start around £30000 for the entry-level and £41000 for the M135.
The promise of more responsive engines and enhanced handling all points to the new 1 Series being as popular and engaging as the current model – consider the bar once again in the premium compact sector.
